Introduction:

Dissolved Air Flotation Unit (DAF) is a fast and highly efficient method for removing turbidity, color, suspended solids and other contaminants from water using air bubbles. These specially created air bubbles are first mixed with wastewater, attach themselves to solids present and then separate them by flotation leaving clarified water behind. DAF has become widely accepted for use in potable water treatment, municipal wastewater as well as a variety of industrial applications

Working Principle:

  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is an efficient flotation method for water clarification
  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is a process for the removal of fine suspended material from an aqueous suspension. The term "flotation" indicates something floated on or at the surface of a liquid
  • The DAF provides the energy for effective flotation in the form of extremely fine air bubbles, which become attached to the suspended material to be removed. This attachment of bubbles to the particle "reduces" the density of the particle resulting in increased buoyancy, thus effecting flotation. Chemical conditioning is often used to increase the effectiveness of the dissolved air flotation process

We call water "hard" if it contains a lot of calcium or magnesium dissolved in it. A water softener reduces the dissolved calcium, magnesium, and to some degree manganese and ferrous iron ion concentration in hard water. These "hardness ions" cause three major kinds of undesired effects.

Most visibly, metal ions react with soaps and calcium-sensitive detergents, hindering their ability to lather and forming a precipitate-the familiar "bathtub ring". Presence of "hardness ions" also inhibits the cleaning effect of detergent formulations.

Second, calcium and magnesium carbonates tend to precipitate out as hard deposits to the surfaces of pipes and heat exchanger surfaces. This is principally caused by thermal decomposition of bi-carbonate ions but also happens to some extent even in the absence of such ions. The resulting build-up of scale can restrict water flow in pipes. In boilers, the deposits act as an insulation that impairs the flow of heat into water, reducing the heating efficiency and allowing the metal boiler components to overheat. In a pressurized system, this can lead to failure of the boiler.

Third, the presence of ions in an electrolyte, in this case, hard water, can also lead to galvanic corrosion, in which one metal will preferentially corrode when in contact with another type of metal, when both are in contact with an electrolyte. However the sodium (or potassium) ions released during conventional water softening are much more electrolytically active than the calcium or magnesium ions that they replace and galvanic corrosion would be expected to be substantially increased by water softening and not decreased. Similarly if any lead plumbing is in use, softened water is likely to be substantially more plumbo-solvent than hard water

Ion-Exchange Resin Devices:

Conventional water-softening devices intended for household use depend on an ion-exchange resin in which "hardness" ions trade places with sodium ions that are electro-statically bound to the anionic functional groups of the polymeric resin. A class of minerals called zeolites also exhibits ion-exchange properties; these minerals were widely used in earlier water softeners. Water softeners may be desirable when the source of water is a well, whether municipal or private.

How it Works:

The water to be treated passes through a bed of the resin. Negatively-charged resins absorb and bind metal ions, which are positively charged. The resins initially contain univalent hydrogen, sodium or potassium ions, which exchange with divalent calcium and magnesium ions in the water. As the water passes through the resin column, the hardness ions replace the hydrogen, sodium or potassium ions which are released into the water. The "harder" the water, the more hydrogen, sodium or potassium ions are released from the resin and into the water.

Resins are also available to remove carbonate, bi-carbonate and sulphate ions which are absorbed and hydroxyl ions released from the resin. Both types of resin may be provided in a single water softener.

There are three ways in which ion-exchange technology can be used in water treatment and purification:

  • First, cation-exchange resins alone can be employed to soften water by base exchange
  • secondly, anion-exchange resins alone can be used for organic scavenging or nitrate removal; and thirdly, combinations of cation-exchange and anion-exchange resins can be used to remove virtually all the ionic impurities present in the feed-water, a process known as de-ionization. Operating Principle:

Further high purity water can be achieved by Mixed Bed Deionisers, which are designed to produce high purity treated water. They can be used as polishing units after two bed DM Plant to obtain high purity water. Mixed Bed Deionisers are single column units, filled with strongly acidic cation and strongly basic anion exchange resins mixed together.

There are four distinct stages in the operation of Deionisers:

  • Service
  • Backwashing
  • Regeneration
  • Rinse/remix

Service:

In the Service cycle the water enters the vessel and passes through the Resin bed of the respective exchanger.

Back Washing:

After the resins are exhausted, the bed is back washed. Back washing is carried out by a uniform upward flow of water through the resin bed. The backwash step expands the resin bed releasing any entrapped particulate matter & removes the channelling in the resin column if occurred during the service cycle.

Regeneration:

When the ion exchange resins loose all the exchangeable ions, they require regeneration to restore them back to hydrogen or hydroxyl form depending upon whether they are cation or anion resins. To achieve this 4 - 5% concentrated solution of Hydrochloric acid is used for cation resin and a 4% - 5% concentrated solution of caustic soda for anion resin. Sulphuric acid can also be used for Cation Regeneration but the concentration of acid during injection must be kept at minimum, such as to prevent calcium sulphate precipitation on the resin.

Rinse:
 
  • The final stage of regeneration is to rinse the resins of excess regenerate

The Primary Settling Tank are designed to reduce the velocity of the wastewater flow for organic solids (called raw sludge) to settle. Scrapers present in the tank move continuously along the floor of the tank to deposit the raw sludge in hoppers for removal. The scum which floats to the surface is directed by water jets to the sludge sump. The raw sludge is then pumped to the sludge digester for biological treatment. Approximately 60% of suspended solids and 35% of BOD removal efficiency can be achieved at this stage. From the primary settling tank, the liquid goes through an aeration and or bio filtration process before entering the secondary tank.either bio filtration or an activated sludge process.

In the sedimentation tank the solids settle out to be removed by mechanically driven scrapers for further processing. In the case of circular tanks the scraper blades scrape the settled sludge to a central sludge removal hopper and in rectangular tanks to a hopper at one end of the tank.  Scraper mechanisms for primary tanks will also be fitted with surface scum removal equipment to remove floating matter, scum and grease etc. Approximately 65% of organic solids and 35% of the BOD in the sewage is removed in the primary process.

From the primary settling tank, the liquid goes through an aeration and or bio filtration process before entering the secondary tank.

The Secondary Settling Tank sedimentation tanks or settling basins or clarifiers allow the micro-organisms and other solids to settle after secondary or biological treatment. This sludge is pumped back into the inlet end of the primary sedimentation tanks and settles with the raw sludge. At this stage the BOD may be reduced to approximately 75 - 80% of the inffluent level and suspended solids are removed.

In the activated sludge process, the biological sludge mass has to be separated from the treated water to produce clear final effluent. This solid-liquid separation process is usually achieved by gravity sedimentation in traditional secondary settling tanks (SSTs, often referred as secondary settlers, final clarifier or secondary thickeners).  From the biological reactor the mixed enters the secondary clarifier where it should be sufficiently clarified in order to produce an effluent of acceptable quality.

The sludge should also be adequately thickened so that the desired solids level in the bisectors can be maintained through sludge re-circulation. Furthermore, secondary settlers should function as storage tanks to store sludge under high solids loading rate and high surface overflow rate typically under peak wet weather conditions. Should any of these functions fail, suspended solids (SS) will be carried over the effluent weirs and escape with effluent. Besides the resulting poor effluent quality, excessive loss of SS may result in the decrease of mixed suspended solids and hence the sludge age, what affects the whole biological process.

Clarifier separate solids from the liquid stream. In waste water treatment the terms clarifier and sedimentation tank are synonymous. The purpose of the scraper mechanism mounted inside the tank, is to collect the settled solids for removal from the tank by pumping. In circular sedimentation tanks the clarifier mechanism has floor scrapers attached to a rotating arm scraping the sludge towards a central hopper or an overhead trough.

In rectangular clarifier scrapers are carried along the tank bottom collecting the sludge into a trough or hopper at the in-fluent end of the tank.

Sedimentation tank scraper mechanisms may take different forms depending on whether the mechanisms are for primary, secondary or tertiary treatment in rectangular clarification tanks the mechanism may be of the chain and flight type or have scrapers and scum removal equipment suspended from a travelling bridge.

Circular settling tanks and clarifier are generally preferred, as they require less maintenance, sludge removal is faster and higher removal efficiencies can be obtained. Rectangular tanks are predominantly used in very large treatment plants or in confined spaces, making maximum use of the area available.
